Selectees may be appointed to these positions under a proposed

excepted appointment which is limited to 3 years and 120 days. Upon

completion of this period, you will either be converted to career

status or separated based on the expiration of the appointment.

Special Agents are generally hired at the GL-7 or GL-9 grade levels

depending on qualifications and education. Based on those grade

levels and geographic area assigned, the 2009 starting salary range

is $43,200 - $73,354. An additional 25% Law Enforcement Availability

Pay (LEAP) will be added to locality pay.

Major Duties:

Special Agents are charged with two missions: protection and

investigations. During the course of their careers, special agents

carry out assignments in both of these areas and may be assigned to

multiple duty stations throughout the U.S. and abroad.

PROTECTION: Special Agents protect the United States President, Vice

President, President-elect, Vice President-elect, their immediate

families, former Presidents, their spouses and minor children until

age 16, visiting foreign heads of states/governments, their

accompanying spouses, major Presidential and Vice Presidential

candidates, their spouses, and others designated by law.

INVESTIGATIONS: Special Agents conduct criminal investigations

pertaining to the counterfeiting of United States and foreign

government obligations and securities; fictitious and fraudulently

negotiated government and commercial securities, identity theft,

false identification, computer crimes, access device fraud,

telecommunications fraud, telemarketing fraud, electronic funds

transfer fraud, and fraud concerning federally insured financial

institutions.

Qualifications:

In order for your application to be considered, you must meet the

following requirements:

Be between the ages of 21 and less than 37 at the time of

appointment (unless you have previous service in a Federal Civilian

Law Enforcement position covered by special civil service retirement

provisions, including early or mandatory retirement or are a veteran);

Possess a current valid driver's license; AND

Possess visual acuity no worse than 20/60 uncorrected,

correctable to 20/20 in each eye. (Note: Lasik, ALK, RK, and PRK

corrective eye surgeries are acceptable eye surgeries for Special

Agent applicants. Applicants will be considered eligible for the

Special Agent position provided specific visual tests are passed. The

following are waiting periods for visual tests: Lasik-3 months after

surgery, PRK-6 months after surgery, and ALK and RK-one year after

surgery.

To qualify for the GL-7 level, you must possess:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with

superior academic achievement. Superior academic achievement is

defined as meeting at least one of the following requirements: being

in the upper third of your graduating class; having a grade point

average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0, based on four years

of undergraduate education or based on courses completed during the

final two years of curriculum; having a grade point average of 3.5 or

higher out of a possible 4.0, based on required courses completed in

your major or required courses in your major completed during the

final two years of curriculum; or being a member of a national

scholastic honor society that meets the requirements of the

Association of College Honor Societies.

OR

At least one full year of graduate level education (i.e. 18

semester hours).

OR

At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-

5 level which is in or directly related to the line of work of the

position. Specialized experience is defined as conducting routine

investigations for developmental purposes, or as part of a team or

task force; serving subpoenas; participating in the execution of

search warrants; seizing evidence; conducting interviews and/or

interrogations; taking affidavits from suspects and witnesses;

conducting routine surveillance; testifying in court as a witness to

events or to explain basic procedures; preparing reports of routine

investigations; and assisting in arrests.

OR

A combination of specialized experience, as described above, and

related graduate level education.

To qualify at the GL-9 level you must possess:

A master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as LL.B. or J.D.)

or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education,

in a related field, leading to such a degree from an accredited

college or university.

OR

At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-

7 level, which is in or directly related to the line of work of the

position. Specialized experience is defined as investigating complex

criminal cases (including but not limited to: felony crimes,

narcotics, violent and serial crimes, child abuse, sexual

exploitation, computer and technology-related crime, bias-related

crimes, auto theft, consumer product tampering, organized crime,

etc.) requiring the use of recognized investigative techniques,

interviews, interrogations, and/or surveillance; preparing

investigative reports and/or information to present to District or US

Attorney's office; leadership of a criminal investigative team or

component in which the principal duties consisted of security

investigation, intelligence gathering or criminal prosecution.

A combination of specialized experience, as described above, and

related graduate level education, beyond the first full year of

graduate level study.

Conditions of Employment

If selected for this position, you will be required to:

Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug

testing while you occupy the position.

Submit to a polygraph examination prior to your appointment.

Undergo frequent travel.

Possess a valid state motor vehicle operator's license upon

appointment and maintain a valid license while you occupy the

position.

Obtain and maintain a top secret clearance. Completion of a full

field investigation is required before appointment.

Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also

mandatory. You will be ineligible to occupy this position if at any

time you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic

violence, unless you received a pardon or your conviction was

expunged or set aside.

Complete 10 weeks of intensive training at the Federal Law

Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA and 17 weeks of

specialized training at the James J. Rowley Training Center in

Laurel, MD. Failure to pass the training program on the first attempt

will result in separation from the Secret Service.

Complete a pre-employment medical examination (including vision,

hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities) by an authorized

Government physician and be determined physically fit to perform

strenuous and physically demanding duties. You will be required to

undergo regular physical examinations and to maintain a level of

physical fitness in accordance with the standards and policies of

this agency.

Sign a mobility agreement stating your willingness to accept

assignments anywhere within the United States and overseas.

Agree to work an average of two extra hours per day. Law

Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) has been approved to compensate

for unscheduled duty in excess of the 40-hour workweek. See

Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service

System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male

applicant born after December 31, 1959.

How You Will Be Evaluated:

Your application will be rated on the extent and quality of your

experience, education and training relevant to the duties of the

position. A score will automatically be calculated based on your

WORK SCHEDULE:

Special Agents are normally assigned to work a 40-hour (normal

business) workweek (e.g., 9:00am-5:30pm), Monday through Friday,

while assigned to field offices. Due to the receipt of LEAP, Special

Agents usually work an average of 2 additional hours per day. While

conducting certain criminal investigative assignments, protective

assignments, and/or being assigned to a protective detail, Special

Agents usually work hours other than normal business hours (e.g.,

12mn-8am, 4pm-12mn, 10am-6pm, 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm, etc.), in addition

to 2 or more LEAP hours, on a daily basis. In short, during such

assignments, the hours worked by Special Agents will vary depending

on the nature of their assignments.
